New Zealand Culture and Environment

The tour content illustrates the relationship between culture and environment (built and natural) for both Maori and European New Zealanders. The program starts with the historical context of both cultures, examining issues of biculturalism, and then engages with contemporary New Zealand culture. This experience is mixed with opportunities for adventure and nature experience New Zealand!

Day 1: Depart the USA - Wichita to Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand

Day 2: Cross the International dateline

Day 3: Arrive in New Zealand (D)
Introduction to Culture and Environment program and outcomes.
Meet your key tour leader and lecturer. Travel to Tauranga.

Day 4: Tauranga (B)
Maori as indigenous peoples, their evolving culture and relationship with landscape.
After a formal welcome on to a Maori Marae, learn about Maori history and connection with the natural world, and gain interactive experience of current Maori culture and issues.

Day 5: Tauranga (B)
Bay of Plenty, the attraction of the coastline and land use issues.
Beach culture Bay of Plenty style. Take a look at modern kiwi beach culture, and the tension between different land-users due to the concentration of people at the coast.

Day 6: Tauranga (B)
Community involvement in land use issues.
Smart Growth  revolutionary approaches to sustainable development. Meet a community environmental group as a case study, and examine government community involvement processes.

Day 7: Tauranga (B,D)
Experiencing Manaakitanga  hosting by Maori at their place.
A free day for dolphin swimming, exploring rainforests or relaxing followed by an evening meal, cultural performances and immersion at the Maori Marae.

Day 8: Rotorua (B)
Innovation as a key driver in New Zealand culture.
Interactive experiences of innovation in agriculture and tourism.
Kiwifruit and jetboats  iconic New Zealand innovation.

Day 9: Rotorua (B)
Development of Maori-themed tourism experiences in a contemporary setting.
Experience the interaction between Maori cultural tourism and thermal-based tourism in Rotorua, the birth place of Maori tourism. See the conservation ethic in action.

Day 10: Rotorua (B)
Free day experiencing the adventure of New Zealand.

Day 11: Waitomo (B)
Underground world of caves and glowworms. Managing a fragile environment.
Experience Black Water Rafting as you explore the underground world of limestone caves.

Day 12: Rotorua to Auckland to USA (B)
Taking the experience home.

Cost: $3,995.00 per person based on multi room accommodations from Wichita, KS.


Airfares: Wichita to Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand round trip excursion class airfare

Accommodation: In triple or quad room hostel accommodations

Educational: All educational content as shown in the itinerary

Airport assistance: Meet & greet assistance on arrival at Auckland International Airport.

Meals: Meals are included as shown in the Itinerary

Transportation: All land transfers and travel within New Zealand are in a private vehicle with a driver/guide.

Taxes: New Zealand Goods & Services Tax (GST), currently at 12.5% on the services included in the cost and are subject to being adjusted if these taxes change

Tour costs and operation based on minimum of 10 participants and currency rates (subject to change).


Accommodation: The use of rooms beyond normal check out time.
Meals: All meals not shown in the itinerary.
Sights: All sightseeing not shown in the itinerary.
Gratuities: Gratuities for drivers, bellmen, porters, waiters, etc
Other: Items of a personal nature e.g. room service, laundry, phone calls, etc

Travel Insurance is recommended and available from ANZ Tours.


An initial deposit of $1,600.00 per person (land/air is payable by check or credit card and due a this time in order to hold space and guarantee airfare). Final payment is due for balance of tour 60 days before departure.


A handling fee of $100.00 per person plus any applicable vendor fees will be charged after receipt of deposit. From deposit to departure, $350.00 per person plus any penalties assessed by hotels, transportation companies, airlines and other purveyors of service will be charged.

Academic Credit: Enrollment in 3 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit required for students under 25; a non-credit option is available for older participants. Credit costs plus applicable fees will be advised upon request.

Both live and online orientation and pre-trip reading review sessions will be scheduled in the month prior to departure.
